Every child deserves to grow up healthy, safe, and hopeful.

Ütz B’ey Guatemala | The Right Path

Formerly known as Project Somos

Ütz B’ey means The Right Path in Kaqchikel, the Mayan language spoken in Aldea Chivarabal - the community we’ve called home since 2009. Our new name was a gift from this community, a reflection of our shared vision: to guide children toward their right path in life.

We equip children and families by fostering safe, loving communities where they can access quality education, nutrition, health, and economic opportunities.

We imagine a Guatemala where every child grows up healthy, safe, and loved, within strong communities that nourish their potential and expand their future.

Our Programs
We take a holistic approach to child development, one that nurtures the whole child, not just their academic growth. We believe children thrive when their minds, bodies, and hearts are supported together. That’s why our programs are designed to meet interconnected needs: education, nutrition, health, and economic stability, all rooted in strong family and community ties. By creating a safe, nurturing environment and opportunities to grow, we help children and families walk the right path toward a life of dignity, purpose, and potential.

We believe education is the foundation for lasting change and it must go beyond textbooks. Our holistic education program supports children from preschool through middle school with full-day schooling and after-school support. Our educational goal is to help every child become trilingual in today’s world: Spanish, English, and technology.

Alongside core academics, we offer life skills classes that build emotional intelligence, communication, decision-making, and personal responsibility. Children explore their creativity and talents through gardening, art, music, and baking, developing both confidence and practical abilities. At age 11, each student designs and completes a personal life project, a milestone that celebrates their growth and prepares them for the next stage of their journey.

Hungry children can’t learn or grow. That’s why we provide two daily snacks and a balanced lunch, which includes a hot meal and fresh salad. This keeps children healthy, focused, and thriving. Over 70% of the food that the children eat comes from our organic garden, free of chemicals pesticides - a much healthier alternative to the ultra-processed foods that many low-income families rely on. We also educate families on nutrition and food security, helping build stronger homes and long-term well-being. Our nutritional goals are for children to be a healthy weight for their age, and go into adulthood equipped with healthy eating habits.

Our onsite health clinic was built in 2018 and since 2025, we have hosted Aldea Chivarabal’s health centre staffed by Ana Salomon, a dedicated nurse from the the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance. Our clinic operates Monday to Friday, 8am - 4:30pm. She works closely with each family to ensure access to regular check-ups, basic medical care, and hygiene education. Our goal is to understand more deeply our community’s health needs so we can support Ana in meeting them.

We want to support every child not just during school years, but into young adulthood. As our students grow, we develop programs focused on career exploration, further education, and economic opportunity. By collaborating with local organizations, we aim to offer skills training, micro-enterprise support, and sustainable income pathways. Our empowerment goal is to equip children to find their path in life, and support them until they are independent.

We believe that real change happens in and through the community. We foster spaces of trust, inclusion, and collaboration where families feel safe, supported, and connected. Through regular meetings and shared decision-making, we prioritize community-driven programming that reflects local wisdom and builds lasting pathways out of poverty.

Where We Work

We work primarily with Aldea Chivarabal, a rural community in the highlands of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Home to 1,000 people across 208 families, Chivarabal is at the heart of our daily work and where our facilities are located. We also support families from the nearby city of Tecpán, and together, we welcome 76 children and youth into our onsite programs.

Our onsite health clinic serves the full Chivarabal community, providing care to all 1,000 residents from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tecpán Guatemala is home to Iximche, the last Maya capital, and was also the site of the first Spanish capital in Guatemala. Rich in Kaqchikel Maya history and culture, Tecpán is surrounded by mountains and farmland. While it holds significant cultural and historical importance, many families continue to face challenges related to poverty, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and a lack of stable livelihoods.

Expansion Plans

We are partnering with the Ministry of Education to certify our teaching programs and share our approach with more public schools across Chimaltenango. Our program, Preparing for Your Future, will integrate our core vision of trilingual education: Spanish literacy, English as a second language, and digital fluency, into the public school curriculum as part of each child’s weekly learning. Public education in rural areas is often under-resourced, and it’s rare for schools to have dedicated English or technology teachers unless parents pay their salaries. Our goal is to close this gap.
